from Pakhol, I have the honour to transmit to you herewith

copies of five despatahes 1o8. 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10, which

have been received from His Majesty's Consal at Kiungobow,

and which give a good description of the dangers and

difficulties of the situation with which Mr. R.S. ¿ratt

has had to deal both during and after the occupation of

that port and the surrounding districts of Hainan Island

by the "Red" Cantonese forces.

2. On receipt of Mr. Pratt's despatoh Ho. 6 I

telegraphed to the Commander-in-Chief through Him

Excellency the Governor of Hongkong stating that in view

of possibly serious developments at Kiungohow I hoped that

he would be able in co-operation with Bir Cecil Clementi

to arrange for assistance to the British communities at

Pakhol and Hoihow in regard to the provisioning and to the

maintenance of communications with Hongkong on the lines

suggested in His Majesty's Consul's above mentioned

despatch.

3. I was, however, not unduly apprehensive of any

possible developments in the situation at Kiungohow in
